When scientists investigated the origin of how magnets attract and repel each other, they arrived at the spin magnetic moment of electrons. Such individual electrons are called unpaired electrons, and they act like tiny magnets. However, the magnetic properties of a single molecule are extremely weak. Therefore, technology is needed to align individual molecules. Q. Whether its possible to align spins in molecules is the most challenging topic were working on right now. I think...

All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Draw like an Architect - Essential Tips" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24rnfO8s0hU -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Overview: This project is all about forward motion and improvement! Our mission is simple: to practice agriculture in the most wholesome ways – nurturing the lands that we ask to feed us while developing Aquaponics. We are not only certified Organic but practice the most sustainable farming methods known today. The Farming Fish is a leader in the growing field of commercial Aquaponics. With a one quarter acre greenhouse, we are the largest organic aquaponics farm in the US. Our farm is pretty amazing, we’re showing every day, bringing Organic Aquaponic food to market, that resources can be better utilized and preserved for future generations. We grow a variety of leafy vegetables and superfoods, most sold living for highest nutritional value and shelf life, and the most sustainable seafood products out there. These upgrades will ensure our continued production and allow us to keep the climate controls necessary for consistently. The aquaponic system is currently set up to yield over 7,200 cases of greens and 12,000 pounds of fish per year. Over the past three years we have learned a great deal and are ready to instituted upgrades and improvements to operate even more efficiently in all four seasons. Using double layer poly to re-cover the greenhouse will give us the added insulation we need in the winter months. With the added insulation value a cooling and heating system can most efficiently keep the climate controls for ideal growing stable through all seasons. And what better place than Southern Oregon to propel sustainable agriculture, this vibrant farming community is brimming with farms making full use of best farming practices; and now with our recent ballot measure passed this spring, our farms are free from contamination, no GMOs can be grown in our county. Goal: By reaching our funding goal of $42,000 by August 30 we will be able to complete installation of double poly on the greenhouse for higher insulation value and efficiency by September 15, as well as install heating and cooling systems to utilize this efficiency by October 15. If we exceed our goal by $30,000 we will be able to install a new fish breeding system and expand our plant nursery in the spring of 2015. By breeding more fish we can better supply other aquaponic growers and maximize our farms ability to provide more sustainably raised fish. And if we exceed our goal by $50,000 we will also be able to build a cob intern dwelling. This financial goal enables us to house interns and begin our Farm Fresh to Food Banks Initiative in the spring of 2015, providing aquaponic education to those who grow and pack food on our farm specifically for regional food banks. Budget: Double Layer Poly $9,000 Cooling System $15,200 Heating System $17,800 Total $42,000 Video used with permission. Video Copyright (c) of its respective owner.

Learn the secrets of Australia's Top Organic Farmers. Organic farming is currently receiving a lot of attention. Many farmers are keen to give organics a go but are unsure about the process involved and it's viability. Our one hour video hopes to demystify organic farming by bringing together some of Australia's top commercial organic and non-toxic farmers, and ask them how they manage their enterprises without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Mark joined a tour led by Nuffield Farming Scholar Don MacFarlane which took in ten different properties including the Victorian Agricultural Research Centre. The great thing about the one hour video is that it allows the farmers involved to tell their own story on why they went organic, how they went about it and whether it has been a viable move. The video covers such diverse farming enterprises as organic cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, grain, wine, fruit and vegetables. Some of the farms included in the video are: The Druce family farm "Green Grove" which produces it's own flour and confectionary at their Junee flourmill. Alan Druce has been organic since 1962 and the success they are having with their Green Grove Organics operation in Junee is a fine example to country towns everywhere of what can be done to bring life back into the country. The Statham Family property "Rosnay" near Canowindra which is setting up a grower-marketing group for organic wine, olives, potatoes and pastured poultry. The Statham's wish to form an organic farming community at Rosnay, with 20 acre blocks available for purchase. Nick and Fiona Chambers of 'Fernleigh Farms' near Daylesford, who farm organic vegetables, beef and grazing pigs. They have developed an export market to Japan. Fiona is a senior consultant with Rendell McGuckian Agricultural and Management Consultants and is involved in developing the organic dairy industry. The Johnson's of Wombat Wholefoods near Young show farmer's how even with limited acreage, non-toxic farming can be successful. Sam Johnson runs laying and meat chickens in movable pens, free range turkeys, pigs, cattle and fruit trees. Sam has an on property abattoir and direct markets his produce to consumers and restaurants. An amazing system whereby any waste from the abattoir is used to fertilize his fruit trees and any spoilt fruit is fed to his pigs. The Snowy Mountain Organic Dairy Farm near Cooryong. Stephen Whitstead was recently awarded Victorian Farmer of the year for his initiative in filling a niche market with low fat milk and cream. Weekly times Farmer of the year nominees Gerry and Terry Browning of Yarrawonga, who have had great success using organic principles to rotationally graze their 350 cow herd in a single mob. The video is full of good advice and good ideas. It is refreshing to hear farmers themselves talk passionately and succinctly about their operations. The Yoshioka Laboratory is studying organic magnetic materials. Magnetism has been thought unique to metallic elements, and unrelated to organic substances. Recently, however, its become clear that it may be possible to make magnets using organic materials, which have low specific gravity and are flexible. I think one way of aligning spins in molecules is to make polymers, by utilizing intermolecular forces. Weve succeeded in synthesizing stable radicals with hydrogen bonds, and these molecules exhibit this property. Q. This only occurs at very low temperatures. But if such materials can be manufactured, its possible that theyll be attracted by magnets at room temperature, and able to act as magnets themselves. So theres the possibility of making lightweight, very flexible magnets. If this can be applied to drug capsules, for example, we expect such materials could be used to transport drugs, by placing a magnet near the patient after drugs have been administered. Also, because the oxidized or reduced forms of stable radicals are also chemically stable, they can be oxidized and reduced repeatedly. So these materials are also attracting attention as new battery materials. For this research, information about where the electrons move inside molecules that is, molecular orbitals - is essential. The Yoshioka Lab uses computers to estimate the extent and energy of molecular orbitals, which helps the researchers to design molecules and materials. Q. Our research belongs to the field of organic functional materials chemistry. I think there are various future possibilities apart from the materials commonly used at present. Research on making things that dont exist yet may be very hard to understand, like grasping at a cloud. Designing such things may come into the category of fundamental research, but its very challenging to create new materials by applying this research to chemical synthesis, physical chemistry, coordination chemistry, and computational chemistry. So I think this is a really interesting topic.
