  • Developing the Architectural Concept - Architecture Short Course (Part 2)

Developing the architectural concept into floor plans, designing the form, and refining the spatial ideas are all covered in part 2 of our architecture short course. The first step in making the abstract concept real is to sketch a floor plan and then give that plan a three-dimensional form. A floor plan is a quick way of describing the hierarchy and relationship of spaces and it begins fixing their real physical dimensions and shapes. Throughout the design process architects must continually consider the design in both the plan, or overhead view, and the sectional, or volumetric view. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is to begin by sketching a plan and then construct a three-dimensional version of that plan either in model form or by sketching. In order to get to three dimensions, we...

All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Be an Amateur (Architect)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AJE4_Xo4ng -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

The Takao Laboratory of Keio University's Faculty of Science and Technology Department of Applied Chemistry is engaged in the research and development of artificially creating various organic compounds extracted from natural sources. Q. "As its name implies, natural products are organic compounds found in nature, but I don't mean seaweed like wakame or kombu. People have been discovering substances useful to humankind from nature such as those used in many medications. We are using chemical reactions to synthesize compounds also beneficial to people without relying on living organisms. Another research theme as one of our two main areas of research is the development of synthesis reactions." The Takao Laboratory is conducting research in two main areas with the goal of producing new organic compounds useful to people. One is "research on synthesis of natural products" in which an inexpensive starting substance is chemically converted into compounds useful to living beings, and the other is "development of new organic synthesis reactions" in which chemical reactions of organic compounds are elicited by various conditions. Included in this research are skeletal transformation reactions and efficient catalyst reactions. Q. "The skeleton of organic compound is made of carbon, and for example there are square four-membered rings, namely cyclobutane rings. By using a metal catalyst, the cyclobutane can be changed into what is called cyclopentane. We have been successful in developing chemical reactions that transform skeletal structures. During this process, a catalytic reaction is one in which just a small amount of metal and organic catalyst are used in such reactions and the catalyst spins round and round. We are also working to have this result in skeletal transformation." The Takao Laboratory also conducts research on antitumor and antibacterial substances found in nature. Q. "Naturally occurring microbes are not producing things with the intention of curing cancer in humans, but the result is that they are producing compounds that destroy cancer cells. As for current drugs, it is not as if humans have completely defeated cancer. Through the efforts of people to date, various anticancer drugs have been developed, but I think it's still not nearly enough. I think that synthetic organic chemistry is needed after all to develop scientists who will create new drugs that cure human disease." Through numerous experiments, the Takao Laboratory is overcoming one barrier after another to enable total synthesis of new compounds useful against diseases resistant to treatment. Q. "We use the terms 'new compounds' and 'useful substances' in regard to what we are targeting as set phrases, but as to whether they are useful or not, to be honest I don't know. They are simply new. However, there may come a time some years later, maybe 50 years from now, when this compound is absolutely essential to people. It is for just such a time that we want to test the power of science to show that new compounds can also be created." Q. "As for drugs that are effective in treating cancer or Alzheimer's, there are aspects of their structure that we already know. To make them more efficient will require more efficient chemical reactions. So we always carry the hope that the reactions we are developing will be used in applications such as these."

Learn the secrets of Australia's Top Organic Farmers. Organic farming is currently receiving a lot of attention. Many farmers are keen to give organics a go but are unsure about the process involved and it's viability. Our one hour video hopes to demystify organic farming by bringing together some of Australia's top commercial organic and non-toxic farmers, and ask them how they manage their enterprises without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Mark joined a tour led by Nuffield Farming Scholar Don MacFarlane which took in ten different properties including the Victorian Agricultural Research Centre. The great thing about the one hour video is that it allows the farmers involved to tell their own story on why they went organic, how they went about it and whether it has been a viable move. The video covers such diverse farming enterprises as organic cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, grain, wine, fruit and vegetables. Some of the farms included in the video are: The Druce family farm "Green Grove" which produces it's own flour and confectionary at their Junee flourmill. Alan Druce has been organic since 1962 and the success they are having with their Green Grove Organics operation in Junee is a fine example to country towns everywhere of what can be done to bring life back into the country. The Statham Family property "Rosnay" near Canowindra which is setting up a grower-marketing group for organic wine, olives, potatoes and pastured poultry. The Statham's wish to form an organic farming community at Rosnay, with 20 acre blocks available for purchase. Nick and Fiona Chambers of 'Fernleigh Farms' near Daylesford, who farm organic vegetables, beef and grazing pigs. They have developed an export market to Japan. Fiona is a senior consultant with Rendell McGuckian Agricultural and Management Consultants and is involved in developing the organic dairy industry. The Johnson's of Wombat Wholefoods near Young show farmer's how even with limited acreage, non-toxic farming can be successful. Sam Johnson runs laying and meat chickens in movable pens, free range turkeys, pigs, cattle and fruit trees. Sam has an on property abattoir and direct markets his produce to consumers and restaurants. An amazing system whereby any waste from the abattoir is used to fertilize his fruit trees and any spoilt fruit is fed to his pigs. The Snowy Mountain Organic Dairy Farm near Cooryong. Stephen Whitstead was recently awarded Victorian Farmer of the year for his initiative in filling a niche market with low fat milk and cream. Weekly times Farmer of the year nominees Gerry and Terry Browning of Yarrawonga, who have had great success using organic principles to rotationally graze their 350 cow herd in a single mob. The video is full of good advice and good ideas. It is refreshing to hear farmers themselves talk passionately and succinctly about their operations. In order to get to three dimensions, we have to make some decisions about form, space, and order. When we speak about form we’re referring not only to a building’s shape but also to its size, scale, color, and texture…basically, all the visual properties of an object. Form has a direct relationship to space in that it influences both interior and exterior rooms. And lastly, order is how we choose to orient and relate the forms and spaces to each other. This directs the inhabitant’s experience of a place. We'll review strategies for refining the floor plan, designing meaningful building forms, editing, and converting two-dimensional abstract concepts into three-dimensional buildings.
